Utility expenses represent a big percentage of our monthly budget. Research points at the factors of prices skyrocketing or dropping in each of the 50 states.
Electricity is the biggest utility bill in the pack. It also sees the highest price fluctuation. The factors affecting it include global oil supply & rates, mandates for clean power. These mandates are in place to avoid worldwide climate change. Certain states have favorable geography and resource availability. Thus, they are able to keep the rates stable.

Well, it seems to be that offshore states pay the most.

The average price for utilities in the US is around $400 a month. Residents of Hawaii pays an estimated $740 per month. Their utility bills are $200 more than Alaska, which is the second most expensive state. This is due to high electricity & natural gas rates. The average residential electric bill in Hawaii is around $203. This makes it rank no. 1 in the US as a state with the highest electricity rate. Their rates are 80% above the national average as well. The reason being, it imports all is power requirements. Still, Hawaii’s tap water is one of the best quality drinking water around. It is rainwater that is naturally filtered through underground porous volcanic rock.

Utility expenses in Alaska is an average of $528 a month. They depend on fossil fuels for their electricity generation. These fossil fuels are some of the expensive resources available. They pay $120 for 60 Mbps internet speed. This makes them the most expensive state for internet services across the nation.

Anchorage which is the largest city in Alaska uses Aquifers for water supply. These are fed by glaciers & are estimated to be enough to supply water for hundreds of years. It is expensive to install & maintain the water distribution infrastructure here. As a result, a large part of the water bill goes towards the upkeep of this infrastructure.

Rhode Island, even though is one of the smallest states in the US, pays $522 for utility bills. It’s followed by Connecticut at $500/month, New York together & New Hampshire at $480/month.

And these are the states that pay the least.

Idaho is saving the most when it comes to utility bills with an average monthly cost of $344. This is because their electricity generation based on their natural gas. Their electric bill is as low as $50 USD/month. It is followed by Utah at $350 a month. This is courtesy of the large natural gas reservoir in the Rocky Mountain Region.
